How to troubleshoot SATA drive connection problems

24/08/2007 · There are four red ones and two black. If I run my second SATA drive on the black connector it is not recognised. It is only recognised if I have a boot disk and a data disk on red connectors. I was following the instructions in the manual which states " Sata 1/2/5/6 (Red) for Master setting and boot disk and Sata 3/4 (Black) for slave (Data Disk). I can't say on your Dell. On my Dimension E510 there are only two SATA ports and they are for the hard drives. On my home built system with an Intel motherboard, there is a separate SATA port (Red) specifically designated for the eSATA connection, the other ports are all the same color and can be used for internal hard drives or optical drives.
